The Keeper of Lost Records David Thompson’s Mapping of the Fraser River Andreas (Andy) Korsos Andreas Korsos presents a meticulous examination of David Thompson’s mapping of the Fraser River, a river that Thompson never saw during his explorations on the west side of the Rocky Mountains between 1807 and 1812. The examination makes use of the two surviving journals written by Simon Fraser on the 1808 expedition, and a surviving version of Thompson’s great map of 1814 currently located at the National Archives (previously the Public Record Office) in Kew, England. Korsos, reveals the link that exists between the map and the journals, thereby providing confirmation that the map includes a visual record of Fraser’s annotations and the long lost survey notes of Fraser’s first Lieutenant, John Stuart. This revelation also provides testimony of Thompson’s remarkable talents as a cartographer, his clear understanding of surveying, and impressive evidence that historic maps can contain much more than meets the eye, especially in the case of maps generated by the surveyors of the day who experienced firsthand the landscapes they wrote about and illustrated. Korsos will present his findings to the Historic Map Society of British Columbia at a meeting on Monday evening May 9, 2011, at 7 pm, in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Room 256 (Chilcotin Board Room). Everyone is welcome to attend. 2009-2010 PROGRAM Meetings on Monday evenings 7:00pm in the Irving K.
